How it works
Cold water is heavier than warm water, so a properly diffused tank holds cold supply water at the bottom and warm return water on top, separated by a thin thermocline. When utility power drops, chillers stop until generators take the load; the stored cold water is pumped into the loop to absorb server heat through that window. The same tank can also shift chiller load to off-peak hours.
Role in the system
- 1.Cooling ride-through during utility failure and generator start
- 2.Buffers the plant against chiller restart time
- 3.Optional load shifting to off-peak tariff
